Safety
- Call 911 for emergencies only.
- Exercise caution when driving.
- Don't drive through standing water.
- Bridges will only be closed if there are 40 MPH sustained winds.
- Law enforcement is positioned at bridges across the city with wind meters.
- Bridge closures will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Treat traffic signals that are out as a 4-way stop.
Avoid downed power lines. If you see a downed line call the JSO non-emergency line at 630-0500.
Stay away from flooded areas.
Avoid using candles and open flames as a light source. Battery operated light sources, such as flashlights, are safer.
Generator use:
- Under no circumstances should portable generators be used indoors.
- Be sure to turn the generator off and let it cool before refueling.
- Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts could ignite.
- Plug appliances directly into the generator.
- Improper generator use may result in carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, electrocution and fire. Exercise caution.
Do not bring propane tanks into the home. Do not operate a gas or charcoal grill inside the home.

Resident Reminders
- Residents should place large storm debris curbside, but NOT in ditches, near storm drains or on fire hydrants, electrical boxes, water meters or around mailboxes.
Storm debris should be separated from normal household garbage and bagged grass clippings
- Vegetative storm debris should be separated from construction and demolition materials (flooded carpets, furniture, drywall, boards, etc.)

Transportation
- Residents may check the JTA Web site for updates and bus route schedules.
- For road information, residents may dial 511 from a cell or landline, say "Northeast Florida," and be provided the latest road information. It's an interactive voice system; users can say what roadways they are interested in and the system will respond. They can also go to http://www.jax511.com/ to see camera views and incident information.

- If you are not leaving town, know where approved shelters are located and look for announcements regarding openings.
- If you are not leaving your home, gather containers of water and make a final check of your disaster supplies kit.

- Prevention Tips
- Store one gallon of water per person per day (two quarts for drinking, two quarts for food preparation/sanitation).
- Keep at least a three-day supply of water for each person in your household.
- Stock up on non-perishable food
- Expect to lose power, possibly for an extended period of time.
- Have a battery operated radio or TV with extra batteries
- Keep a flashlight with extra batteries on hand
- Have a non-electric can opener
- Safety Tips
- Be sure to have proper ventilation when using generators for electric power.
- Carbon monoxide poisoning is extremely dangerous. Learn how to prevent this carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Be careful what you eat.
- Use extreme care when removing debris, especially while on ladders, rooftops of other surfaces that may be wet or slippery.
- Avoid power lines that are down.
- Be sure to turn appliances off if you lose power to avoid a surge when electricity is restored
- Never leave a burning candle unattended. Place candles on hard, flat, non-flammable surfaces.
- Avoid driving or walk through standing water and areas where water is rising.

- Recovering from a major storm involves thousands of workers and volunteers coordinating their efforts. Professionals are working to restore normal operations to as many people as quickly as possible.
- Be aware of basic safety precautions.
- Take necessary health and food safety precautions.
- Report life threatening situations to 911.
- Report non life threatening situations to the Citizen Information Center (CIC) in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at 630-2472
